The Overview
Trane makes air conditioning and heating systems — the big chillers on top of office buildings, home units, and the refrigeration on trucks and trailers. It also services what it sells, and that servicing is now 34% of its revenue, which matters because service is steadier and usually more profitable than selling machines.
The business is growing well. Last quarter, sales rose 10.6%, and Trane helpfully told us why: about 9 points was genuine growth in the underlying business (mostly more units sold), about 1 point came from companies it bought, and a fraction from currency. In the Americas — five-sixths of the business — genuine growth was nearly 11%.
Here is the problem, and it is the only thing that matters in this report. Sales grew 10.6%. Profits grew 6.5%.
Normally a company like this makes more profit per extra dollar of sales, because the factories and salespeople are already paid for. This quarter the opposite happened. The gross profit margin — what is left after making the product — fell from 37.6 cents on the dollar to 35.6 cents. Every one of the three geographic divisions became less profitable. Europe was worst: sales actually shrank, and its profit margin fell from 18.3% to 14.7%.
The company's explanation is one clause: "inflation and investments." That may be right, and investments made today can pay off later. But it is not much of an explanation for losing two full points of gross margin.
Meanwhile, analysts still expect Trane to earn $15.14 a share this year. It earned $6.94 in the first half. So they need $8.20 in the second half against $6.74 a year ago — a 22% jump — from a company whose profits just grew 6.5%. That looks like a forecast that has not caught up.
The shares cost $472.24, or about 27 times what analysts expect for 2027. Twenty-six analysts cover it and only eleven say Buy; fourteen say Hold and one says Sell. Over the last twelve months the stock is up 7.5% while the market is up 24%.
Our estimate of fair value is $485 — about 3% above the price. That is a Hold.
- Downside Risk 4/10. Little debt, strong cash generation, one-third recurring service revenue.
- Growth Quality 6/10. 9% genuine growth — that is not reaching the profit line.
- Exponential Potential 3/10. An excellent business with a linear slope.
Putting a number on it: our fair-value estimate is $485 against a current price of $448.96 — real upside if our numbers are right.
Our summary metrics
"Rated 4 — a high-quality, cash-generative franchise with a modest balance sheet and a demanding multiple meeting margin pressure. The supports: net debt of $2,851.8 million against roughly $4.2 billion of trailing EBITDA, 0.78 turns; interest coverage of 18.1x; return on equity of 34.5% and return on invested capital of 19.9%; free cash flow of $2,811.5 million in FY2025 on $3,194.5 million of operating cash flow, a 3.6% yield; and — the structural feature that most reduces cyclicality — service revenue of $7,339.6 million, 34.4% of the total and rising, which is installed-base annuity income rather than equipment sales. Beta is 1.195. Against that, four exposures. First and most current: gross profit margin FELL 200 basis points to 35.6% in the June quarter, and Total Segment Adjusted EBITDA grew 6.5% against revenue growth of 10.6% — roughly 410 basis points of NEGATIVE operating leverage, attributed to 'inflation and investments.' Second, EMEA: net revenues down 1.5% with organic revenue down 3.7% and segment EBITDA margin down 360 basis points to 14.7% from 18.3%, a segment now earning barely a third of the Americas margin. Third, the consensus path: FY2026 requires second-half adjusted EPS of $8.20 against $6.74 a year earlier, +21.7%, after a first half that grew 10.5%. Fourth, the balance-sheet composition: tangible book value per share is MINUS $8.54 and tangible asset value MINUS $1,904.9 million, because goodwill of $6,457.0 million and intangibles of $3,236.7 million exceed equity of $8,600.9 million — a feature of a company assembled by acquisition, priced at 12.2 times book. Two management changes are recorded and not weighted: a new Chief Operating Officer effective 2026-07-01, and the departure of the Chief Global Integrated Supply Chain Officer effective 2026-08-01 under a separation agreement in which 'the Company is foregoing the clawback of certain sign-on bonus payments' — the filing states the departure 'is not the result of any disagreement.'"
"Rated 6 — genuinely good top-line growth that is not reaching the profit line. June-quarter net revenues of $6,353.5 million rose 10.6%, and the company gives the full decomposition: volume +8.7%, pricing +0.3% — so ORGANIC +9.0% — plus acquisitions +1.2% and currency +0.4%. The Americas segment, 82.9% of quarterly revenue, grew 12.3% with organic revenue up 10.8% on 'strong demand within our Commercial HVAC and Residential businesses.' First-half revenue of $11,322.9 million grew 8.5%. The multi-year record is strong: revenue $15,991.7M (FY2022), $17,677.6M, $19,838.2M, $21,321.9M (FY2025) — a 10.1% three-year compound rate — with service revenue rising from 31.6% to 34.4% of the mix. But the profit conversion has broken down in the most recent quarter: gross margin −200 basis points to 35.6%, Total Segment Adjusted EBITDA +6.5% against revenue +10.6%, and segment EBITDA margin 22.4% against 23.2%. Every reportable segment saw margin decline: Americas −50 basis points to 23.5%, Asia Pacific −150 to 21.8%, EMEA −360 to 14.7%. Consensus wants adjusted EPS of $15.144 in FY2026 (11 analysts), $17.384 in FY2027 (14) and $20.132 in FY2028 (8) — 16.3%, 14.8% then 15.8% — which requires margin to recover, not merely stabilise. What holds this at 6: the growth is real and the incremental margin on it is currently negative."
"Rated 3 — a superb compounder with no compounding mechanism beyond share gain. The qualitative case is well documented and it comes from outside the company: the knowledge base's independent business analysis credits 'a 100% direct, top-decile-retention technical sales force plus its Toyota-style operating system and cross-functional product growth teams' with '~2-3x peer growth and durable share gains', and identifies the aftermarket as the durable engine — 'Aftermarket/service, ~32% of mix in 2022 and up ~1,000bps since the GFC... still early innings as digital connectivity captures share from independent servicers.' That claim has aged well: service is now 34.4% of revenue. The demand drivers are real and multi-decade — building decarbonisation regulation, chiller replacement economics with a stated 3-5 year payback on a 25-year asset, indoor air quality, and now data-centre thermal load, which is why one channel groups Trane with Quanta Services and Parker Hannifin as AI-derivative picks-and-shovels. But none of it is exponential. Trane sells and services heating and cooling equipment; the installed base grows with construction and replacement cycles; and the service attach rate, which is the highest-quality part of the story, is a share-gain mechanic against independent servicers rather than a new market. A 3: an excellent business with a long runway and a linear slope, currently demonstrating that even excellent businesses can lose 200 basis points of gross margin in a quarter."
What does “fair value” mean?
Fair value is Synthos’s estimate of what one share is worth today, based on our model of the company’s future cash generation and the risks to it. It is not a price target or a prediction of where the stock trades next quarter — it’s the price where we think risk and reward are balanced. Above it, you’re paying for outcomes better than our base case; below it, the market is offering a margin of safety.
The model’s inputs and weightings are proprietary — they’re the product. What we publish is the output, plus an independent, public-math cross-check further down the page (“Check our number”) so you can judge it for yourself.

- "A stock going nowhere while the market goes up, on a print that beat by less than a point. Trane closed 2026-08-04 at $472.24, up 2.39%, which is 6.2% below its 52-week high of $503.46, 25.5% above its low of $376.43, only 0.4% above a 50-day moving average of $470.20 and 7.3% above a 200-day average of $440.28. RSI is 46.1 and MACD is NEGATIVE at −3.85. The three-month return is −2.9% against SPY's +7.6% and the twelve-month is +7.5% against SPY's +24.3% — a 17-point deficit over a year in which revenue grew 10.6% and organic revenue 9.0%. That combination says the multiple has been compressing into rising revenue, which is the market's reaction to the margin problem: gross profit margin down 200 basis points and Total Segment Adjusted EBITDA up 6.5% on revenue up 10.6%. The 2026-07-30 print beat adjusted EPS by only 0.9%, the smallest beat in the five-quarter record and a sharp deceleration from the 2.5% and 4.0% beats before it. The street is at Hold, 11 to 14 with one sell, though its $546.88 target sits 15.8% above spot — a gap we read as target staleness rather than conviction."
- What we’re watching
- "The 2026-10-29 third-quarter print against consensus adjusted EPS of $4.68, which requires 20.6% growth against a quarter in which Total Segment Adjusted EBITDA grew 6.5%. Within it, three numbers matter more than the headline: gross profit margin, at 35.6% against 37.6% a year earlier and the single clearest measure of whether 'inflation and investments' is transitory; Total Segment Adjusted EBITDA margin, at 22.4% against 23.2%; and EMEA organic revenue, down 3.7% in the quarter with segment margin down 360 basis points. Also watch whether the FY2026 consensus of $15.144 is revised down — it currently requires second-half EPS of $8.20 against $6.74, a 21.7% acceleration on a first half that grew 10.5%."

Neutral- Driver
- "The medium-term question is entirely whether the margin compression is cyclical or structural, and this archive cannot settle it. The bull path: organic revenue is growing 9.0% with the Americas at 10.8%, service mix has risen from 31.6% to 34.4% of revenue over three years and is the highest-margin part of the business, price realisation is positive, and the cost pressure the company names — 'inflation and investments' — is by its own description partly discretionary investment rather than pure cost. On that path consensus is achievable: adjusted EPS of $15.144 in FY2026, $17.384 in FY2027 and $20.132 in FY2028, growing 16.3%, 14.8% and 15.8%, with a 27.2x FY2027 multiple that is not obviously wrong for a mid-teens compounder. The bear path is what the most recent quarter actually showed: revenue +10.6%, segment profit +6.5%, gross margin −200 basis points, and every one of three segments losing margin. Negative incremental margins in a business with a 34% service mix and positive pricing are unusual and they are not explained in this archive beyond one clause. Until they reverse, a 27x multiple has to be justified by revenue alone, and revenue alone does not justify it."
- What we’re watching
- "Whether gross margin recovers toward 37%. Whether Total Segment Adjusted EBITDA growth reaccelerates above revenue growth — a single quarter of positive operating leverage would change this verdict. Whether EMEA stabilises: organic revenue down 3.7% with margin at 14.7% against the Americas' 23.5% makes it a drag on both growth and mix, and it is 11.0% of revenue. Whether service mix keeps rising past 34.4%, which is the knowledge base's central bull claim and the one part of this business with genuinely durable economics. Whether the acquisitions completed in the first quarter of 2026 — which contributed 1.2 points of revenue growth and are producing $14.7 million of quarterly acquired-backlog amortisation — earn their price. And whether the new Chief Operating Officer, appointed effective 2026-07-01, changes the cost trajectory."

Tailwind- Driver
- "Long-run the demand case is among the more durable in this batch and it is corroborated from outside the company. Buildings are a large and rising share of global energy consumption; regulation is pushing toward electrification and efficiency; and the replacement economics are compelling on their own terms — the knowledge base's independent analysis puts a 20-year-old chiller replacement at a '3-5 year payback (25-50% IRR) over a 25-year life while cutting carbon.' Layered on that is a new source of demand the same store identifies: data-centre thermal load, which is why one channel groups Trane with Quanta Services and Parker Hannifin as 'the picks-and-shovels of the buildout.' The competitive position is unusually well described: 'a 100% direct, top-decile-retention technical sales force plus its Toyota-style operating system' producing '~2-3x peer growth and durable share gains', and an aftermarket business rising from roughly 32% of mix in 2022 to 34.4% in 2025 as digital connectivity takes share from independent servicers. That last mechanic is the real long-run asset: every unit sold enlarges an annuity the company can defend with data. The counterweight is that all of it is linear, and that the current quarter demonstrates the franchise is not immune to input costs."
- What we’re watching
- "Whether the service attach rate continues to climb — 31.6% of revenue in FY2022, 34.4% in FY2025, and the knowledge base says 'still early innings.' Whether the digital-connectivity mechanic that takes service share from independent contractors is ever quantified by the company. Whether EMEA is eventually restructured or divested; at 11.0% of revenue and a 14.7% segment margin it earns less than half what the Americas does. Whether data-centre thermal becomes a disclosed end market rather than an inference. Whether the pace of bolt-on acquisitions continues to push tangible book value further negative — it is already MINUS $8.54 a share. And chief-executive continuity: David S. Regnery has led the company since 2021 and the archive contains no succession disclosure, though a new Chief Operating Officer was appointed effective 2026-07-01."

1. What the business is, and what it earns
Trane Technologies plc is an Irish-domiciled company (country code IE, Irish statutory tax rate 12.5%), NYSE-listed, with approximately 44,000 employees, led by Chief Executive David S. Regnery. It reports three geographic segments.
Revenue by type, from seg_prod — and it reconciles exactly:
| FY2022 | FY2023 | FY2024 | FY2025 | share | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Product | $10,930.8M | $11,975.4M | $13,314.5M | $13,982.3M | 65.6% |
| Service | $5,060.9M | $5,702.2M | $6,523.7M | $7,339.6M | 34.4% |

| Service share | 31.6% | 32.3% | 32.9% | 34.4% | +280 bps in 3 years |
Service grew 45.0% over three years against product's 27.9%, and the mix shift is the highest-quality fact about this company. It is also the knowledge base's central bull claim, made in 2024 and now confirmed — see Section 4.

And the first half:
| Segment | H1 2026 | H1 2025 | change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Americas | $9,269.7M | $8,493.0M | +9.1% |
| EMEA | $1,337.1M | $1,281.4M | +4.3% |
| Asia Pacific | $716.1M | $660.5M | +8.4% |
| Total revenue | $11,322.9M | $10,434.9M | +8.5% |
| Total Segment Adj. EBITDA | $2,378.9M | $2,251.9M | +5.6% |
Note the pattern repeats over six months: revenue +8.5%, segment profit +5.6%. This is not a one-quarter artefact.
2. The margin problem, in the company's own words
The disclosure is short and it is the whole issue.
> "Gross profit margin for the three months ended June 30, 2026 decreased 200 basis points to 35.6% compared to 37.6% for the same period of 2025 primarily due to inflation and investments, partially offset by productivity and price realization."
> Americas: "Segment Adjusted EBITDA margin for the three months ended June 30, 2026 and 2025 decreased by 50 basis points to 23.5% compared to 24.0% for the same period of 2025, primarily due to inflation and investments, partially offset by productivity and pricing."
Three observations.
First, pricing was positive and it did not save the margin. The company's own revenue bridge gives pricing +0.3% as a contributor to the 10.6% increase. A business realising price and still losing 200 basis points of gross margin is absorbing cost faster than it can pass it on, and "inflation" is doing more work in that sentence than "investments."
Second, the offset came from below the gross line, not above it. Selling and administrative expenses grew only 3.9% against revenue growth of 10.6%, falling 100 basis points to 16.3% of revenue. So Trane held the line on overhead and still could not hold segment margin — 80 basis points of consolidated segment EBITDA margin was lost. That narrows the problem to cost of goods.
Third, EMEA is a separate and worse problem. Net revenues fell 1.5%, and the decomposition shows volume −4.1%, pricing +0.4% (organic −3.7%), acquisitions +0.1%, currency +2.1% — so EMEA is shrinking in constant currency and the reported decline understates it. Segment EBITDA fell 21.1% and margin fell 360 basis points to 14.7%, against the Americas' 23.5%. EMEA is 11.0% of revenue and 7.2% of segment profit.
What this archive does NOT contain and we do not estimate around: the earnings release itself. The 8-K of 2026-07-30 states only that the company "issued a press release announcing its second quarter 2026 results", and the exhibit is not in the extracted text. So there is no management guidance of any kind available for FY2026 — no revenue guide, no EPS guide, no margin commentary beyond the 10-Q's single clause. Every forward figure in this dive is consensus.
3. The consensus arithmetic — and it does not work
This is the sharpest finding in the file and it is pure arithmetic.
| Adjusted EPS | Q1 | Q2 | H1 | Q3 | Q4 | H2 | FY |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| FY2025 actual | $2.40 (derived) | $3.88 | $6.28 | $3.88 | $2.86 | $6.74 | $13.02 |
| FY2026 actual/consensus | $2.63 | $4.31 | $6.94 | $4.68 (E) | implied $3.52 | $8.20 (implied) | $15.144 (E) |
| Growth | +9.6% | +11.1% | +10.5% | +20.6% | +23.1% | +21.7% | +16.3% |
Read the bottom row. The first half grew 10.5%. The consensus requires the second half to grow 21.7%. The third-quarter consensus alone requires 20.6% growth from a quarter in which Total Segment Adjusted EBITDA grew 6.5% and gross margin fell 200 basis points.
There are only three ways that happens: margin snaps back sharply; the revenue acceleration is much larger than the 12.5% the Q3 revenue consensus implies; or the estimates come down. Nothing in this archive supports the first two, and the second-quarter beat of 0.9% — the smallest in the five-quarter record, down from 2.5% and 4.0% — is consistent with the third.
| Quarter | Report date | Adjusted EPS actual | estimate | beat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Q2 2025 | 2025-07-30 | $3.88 | $3.79 | +2.4% |
| Q3 2025 | 2025-10-30 | $3.88 | $3.80 | +2.1% |
| Q4 2025 | 2026-01-29 | $2.86 | $2.81 | +1.8% |

| Q2 2026 | 2026-07-30 | $4.31 | $4.27 | +0.9% |
Five consecutive beats, but the most recent is the smallest, and it came alongside a 2.5% revenue beat — meaning the earnings beat was smaller than the revenue beat, which is the arithmetic signature of margin compression.
4. Knowledge base — six bullish claims, two voices, one confirmed
Raw hits: 6. Case-sensitive entity hits: 6. Name-level claims: 6, ALL BULLISH. Independent sources: 2. Discarded: 0.
Every one of the six case-sensitive hits genuinely names Trane — a clean sweep, which is worth stating explicitly after the Quanta Computer homograph found on PWR in this same batch. The sweep ran entity terms TT, Trane, Trane Technologies, Carrier and CARR across all 51,928 distilled claims.
Four claims from one episode — business_breakdowns, 2026-02-25... 2024-02-25, speaker Brett Larsson, speaker_role: independent, entity TT:
> bullish · conviction 68 · thesis
> "Trane's 100% direct, top-decile-retention technical sales force plus its Toyota-style operating system and cross-functional product growth teams drove ~2-3x peer growth and durable share gains."
> bullish · conviction 65 · thesis
> "Aftermarket/service, ~32% of mix in 2022 and up ~1,000bps since the GFC, has compounded high-single-digits and is still early innings as digital connectivity captures share from independent servicers."
> bullish · conviction 62 · thesis
> "Replacing a 20-year-old chiller offers a 3-5 year payback (25-50% IRR) over a 25-year life while cutting carbon; a compelling value proposition that accelerated over the last 7-10 years."
> bullish · conviction 60 · thesis
> "Three tailwinds — decarbonization/regulation (buildings are 15% of global emissions), digital services, and post-pandemic indoor air quality — support durable HVAC growth, with Trane compounding ~6% over the past decade as a share gainer."
Two claims from compound_and_friends, 2026-02-27, both conviction 70, both naming Carrier, Trane, Quanta Services and Parker Hannifin:
> "AI-derivative industrial-services names remain firmly in gear — the picks-and-shovels of the buildout, not defensive staples/healthcare."
> "AI-derivative industrials (HVAC, power, electrical services) are firmly in gear and reversing well off bear-market lows."
Same channel, same date, same entity list — ONE observation, counted once. (This is the identical claim that appears in the Quanta Services dive in this batch. The two dives share it; recorded so it is not double-counted at portfolio level.)
GRADING — and this is the useful part, because one of these claims is testable and the filings settle it.
| Claim element | Made | Outcome in the filings | Grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| "Aftermarket/service, ~32% of mix in 2022... still early innings" | 2024-02-25 | Service was 31.6% of FY2022 revenue and is 34.4% of FY2025 — up 280 bps in three years | CONFIRMED |
| "Trane compounding ~6% over the past decade" | 2024-02-25 | FY2021 to FY2025 revenue compounded at 10.8% | BEATEN |
| "~2-3x peer growth" | 2024-02-25 | Not testable from this archive — the payload supplies peer market capitalisations only, no peer growth rates | UNGRADED |
| "Toyota-style operating system... durable share gains" | 2024-02-25 | Qualitative; the June quarter's 200 bps of gross-margin loss is at least a question mark against it | OPEN |
CONCENTRATION SENSITIVITY TEST — REQUIRED AND RUN. business_breakdowns supplies 4 of 6 hits, 67%, and all four come from ONE episode, on ONE date, from ONE named speaker. Stripping that channel leaves a single compound_and_friends observation which names Trane only as one of four AI-derivative industrials. Stripping compound_and_friends instead leaves four claims from a business analysis that is now two and a half years old. The honest statement: this is two independent voices, both bullish, and neither is recent enough to speak to the margin compression that is the subject of this dive. A 2024 endorsement of an operating system is not evidence about a 2026 gross margin.
Attribution note. speaker_role fired correctly on all four business_breakdowns claims (independent, Brett Larsson) and is null on the compound_and_friends pair. No claim carries a management speaker_role for this registrant, and none is management framing.
Conclusion. Breadth 2, claim count 6, net conviction positive-low. The Synthos knowledge base likes this business, and so do we. It has nothing to say about the price or about the margin, which are the two questions that determine the verdict.
5. Balance sheet, cash and capital return
| 2023-12-31 | 2024-12-31 | 2025-12-31 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cash and equivalents | $1,095.3M | $1,590.1M | $1,763.3M |
| Short-term debt | $801.9M | $452.2M | $693.0M |
| Long-term debt | $3,977.9M | $4,318.1M | $3,922.1M |
totalDebt (vendor) | $4,779.8M | $5,385.0M | $4,615.1M |
netDebt (vendor) | $3,684.5M | $3,794.9M | $2,851.8M |
| Goodwill + intangibles | $9,535.1M | $9,436.1M | $9,693.7M |
| Total equity | $7,017.0M | $7,486.9M | $8,600.9M |
| Tangible equity | −$2,518.1M | −$1,949.2M | −$1,092.8M |
A vendor defect to record before the conclusions: totalDebt changes definition mid-series. The FY2024 figure of $5,385.0M equals short-term $452.2M plus long-term $4,318.1M plus capitalLeaseObligations of $614.7M. The FY2025 figure of $4,615.1M equals short-term $693.0M plus long-term $3,922.1M with capitalLeaseObligations reported as ZERO. So the apparent $769.9M reduction in debt during 2025 is mostly a definitional change — on a like-for-like pure-debt basis the reduction was $155.2M. This is the T/TJX lease-inclusion class with an added twist: the inclusion is inconsistent between adjacent years in the same block.
On any basis the balance sheet is comfortable. Net debt of $2,851.8M against roughly $4.2 billion of trailing EBITDA is 0.78 turns; interest coverage is 18.1x; and free cash flow was $2,811.5M in FY2025 on operating cash flow of $3,194.5M, a 3.6% yield on the current market capitalisation with capital expenditure of only $383.0M — 44% of depreciation, which is what a low-capital-intensity assembler looks like.
Tangible book value per share is MINUS $8.54, because goodwill and intangibles of $9,693.7M exceed equity of $8,600.9M. At 12.2 times book that is worth noting rather than worrying about: this is a business whose value is a distribution network, a service base and an operating system, none of which appears on a balance sheet.
Capital return is modest. FY2025 repurchases of $1,481.3M (1.4% of market capitalisation) plus a dividend of $3.98 per share, a 0.84% yield at a 29.8% payout. Total shareholder yield of roughly 2.3% is below the batch median and contributes little to the return.
6. Valuation — priced in or room?
At $472.24 (market cap $103.90B, ~220.0M implied shares):
| Trailing | FY2026E | FY2027E | FY2028E | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $22,209M (TTM) | $23,627.5M (12) | $25,766.0M (17) | $28,053.7M (13) |

| Free cash flow yield | 3.6% | — | — | — |
| Dividend yield | 0.84% | — | — | — |
Estimate coverage is adequate and thins sharply. 11 analysts on FY2026 EPS, 14 on FY2027 — the anchor — 8 on FY2028, and 6 each on FY2029 and FY2030, which are excluded. The FY2027 EPS range is $16.938 to $17.912, a 5.6% spread — narrow, and narrower than it should be given the margin uncertainty.
Note the shape of the consensus: revenue growth decelerating from 10.8% to 9.1% to 8.9%, with EPS growth ACCELERATING to 15.8% by FY2028. That requires sustained margin expansion, in a company that just lost 200 basis points of gross margin and 80 basis points of segment EBITDA margin. The consensus and the most recent quarter are pointing in opposite directions, and that is the central tension in this name.
est.ebitdaAvg and est.ebitAvg are REJECTED — fixed ratios, and internally absurd. ebitdaAvg is exactly 23.75% of revenueAvg and ebitAvg exactly 23.31% in every forward year FY2026 through FY2030. The gap between them is 44 basis points — implying annual depreciation and amortisation of roughly $110 million against a reported FY2025 figure of $376.3 million. All forward valuation uses epsAvg.
Peer context is unusable. The vendor peer set — ADP, CARR, EMR, GD, JCI, LMT, MMM, NOC, PH and WM — contains Carrier and Johnson Controls, which are genuine HVAC comparables, alongside a payroll processor, three defence primes, a waste company and three diversified industrials. The payload supplies only market capitalisations and no multiples, so no peer-multiple comparison is drawn. (ADP and GD are separately covered in this same batch; CARR appears in the knowledge-base claim quoted in Section 4.)
6a. What today's price assumes (the inversion)
At $472.24 — 31.2x FY2026 consensus, 27.2x FY2027, 25.3x EV/EBITDA — the price embeds:
- Adjusted EPS reaches $15.144 in 2026 and $17.384 in 2027. (Consensus; 11 and 14 analysts.) The FY2026 figure requires second-half EPS of $8.20 against $6.74 a year earlier — a 21.7% acceleration on a first half that grew 10.5%. This is the most fragile assumption in the price and it is fragile arithmetically rather than judgementally.
- Gross margin recovers from 35.6% toward 37%+. (Our derivation.) Consensus has revenue growth decelerating from 10.8% to 8.9% while EPS growth accelerates to 15.8% by FY2028. That gap can only be margin, and margin is currently moving the other way in all three segments.
- Organic revenue growth stays near 9%. (Filing-sourced.) The Americas at 10.8% organic is doing all the work; EMEA is at −3.7% and Asia Pacific is 6.1% of revenue.
- The market keeps paying 27-31x forward earnings. (Our number.) At 24x FY2027E the stock is $417; at 31x it is $539. The stock has already de-rated once — twelve-month return of +7.5% against revenue growth above 10% — so a further leg is not hypothetical.
- EMEA does not deteriorate further. (Filing-sourced.) Organic revenue −3.7%, segment EBITDA −21.1%, margin 14.7% against 18.3%. At 11.0% of revenue the drag is contained; at the current trajectory it is not stable.
6b. The return bridge (why the multiple moves)
Expected return over the next twelve months decomposes as: adjusted EPS growth (+14.8%, from FY2026E $15.144 to FY2027E $17.384) + multiple drift (COMPRESSION of roughly 12%, from today's 31.2x on the current year toward about 27.5x) + shareholder yield (+2.3%) ≈ +5%.
Our base assumes meaningful multiple compression, and the reason is that we do not believe the FY2026 consensus. If the second half grows 12% rather than the required 21.7%, FY2026 lands near $14.5 rather than $15.14, and the FY2027 number comes down with it. The base of $485 is 27.9x the FY2027 consensus as published, and roughly 29x a downward-revised number — which is to say the base already assumes the estimate falls and the multiple partly holds, rather than the reverse.
If the multiple held at 31.2x FY2027E the price would be $542 (+14.8%) — approximately the street's target. If it compressed to 24x, $417 (−11.7%).
6c. Variant perception (where we differ, what would surprise)
- We differ from the street on the LEVEL and the difference is large: our base of $485 is 11.3% BELOW the consensus target of $546.88 and 12.6% below the median of $555. But note what the street actually says: 11 buy, 14 hold, 1 sell — a HOLD consensus with a 15.8% target. A Hold rating attached to a 15.8% upside target is the signature of targets that have not been revised while ratings have, and we read it that way rather than as conviction.
- Our specific disagreement is the FY2026 estimate and it is arithmetic. H1 adjusted EPS grew 10.5%; the FY2026 consensus requires H2 to grow 21.7%; the Q3 consensus requires 20.6%. Watchable number: the 2026-10-29 print against $4.68. A print near $4.25 — 9.5% growth, in line with the first half — would put FY2026 near $14.6 and force a broad revision.
- We think the market is under-weighting the gross-margin decline because the EPS line still beat. Adjusted EPS beat by 0.9% while revenue beat by 2.5% — the earnings beat was SMALLER than the revenue beat, which is the arithmetic fingerprint of margin compression, and it is the first time that has happened in the five-quarter record. Watchable number: gross profit margin against 35.6%.
- Where we are MORE positive than the multiple implies is the service mix. 34.4% of revenue and rising 280 basis points in three years, with an independent outside analysis calling it 'still early innings as digital connectivity captures share from independent servicers.' That is the part of this company that deserves a premium multiple, and the company does not disclose its margin — which means the market is valuing a blended number that understates the quality of a third of the business. Watchable disclosure: any separate margin figure for service.
- Positive surprise that would force a re-rate: gross margin back above 37% with Total Segment Adjusted EBITDA growing faster than revenue; or EMEA returning to organic growth; or a Q3 print at or above $4.68 with margin expanding, which would mean the compression really was investment timing.
- Negative surprise that would break the thesis: a second consecutive quarter of negative operating leverage; gross margin below 35%; EMEA organic revenue down more than 5%; a downward FY2026 revision below $14.50; or evidence that the 'investments' are permanent structural cost rather than a cycle.
Synthos fair values
All three anchors are multiples of the FY2027 consensus adjusted EPS distribution (mean $17.384, low $16.938, high $17.912, 14 analysts), cross-checked against FY2028E.
- Bear ~$370 — 21.8x the FY2027 consensus LOW of $16.938, and 18.4x FY2028E. Cross-check: 1.7% below the 52-week low of $376.43; 16.0% below the 200-day average. The scenario: margin compression persists, the FY2026 consensus is cut toward $14.50, EMEA keeps shrinking, and a high-quality but decelerating industrial de-rates to the low twenties. −21.6%.
- Base ~$485 — 27.9x the FY2027 consensus MEAN of $17.384, and 24.1x FY2028E. Cross-check: 11.3% below the street's $546.88; 3.6% below the 52-week high; 3.1% above the 50-day average. Sensitivity, stated openly: 25x gives $435 and 31x gives $539. The whole answer lives in a 25-31x band on one estimate row. The scenario: margin stabilises without fully recovering, the FY2026 estimate is trimmed modestly, organic growth holds near 9%, and the multiple gives back a few points. +2.7%.
- Bull ~$585 — 32.7x the FY2027 consensus HIGH of $17.912, and 29.1x FY2028E. Cross-check: exactly the highest street target of $585; 16.2% above the 52-week high. The scenario: the margin decline proves to be investment timing, gross margin recovers above 37%, EMEA turns, and the market re-rates a mid-teens compounder with a rising service annuity. +23.9%.
Base is 2.7% above spot; asymmetry roughly 1.11:1 (21.6% down, 23.9% up), before a shareholder yield of approximately 2.3%. A base within 3% of the price, a payoff ratio at parity, a Hold consensus, and a consensus estimate that requires an acceleration the most recent quarter argues against — that is a Hold.
7. Data integrity, technicals and insiders
Data integrity — four findings
1. totalDebt includes lease obligations in FY2024 and NOT in FY2025 — a mid-series definition change. FY2024's $5,385.0M = $452.2M short-term + $4,318.1M long-term + $614.7M capitalLeaseObligations; FY2025's $4,615.1M = $693.0M + $3,922.1M with capitalLeaseObligations at zero. The apparent $769.9M debt reduction during 2025 is mostly definitional; the like-for-like reduction was $155.2M. FY2023 also shows zero leases, so the FY2024 row is the outlier. All debt figures in this dive use the pure-debt basis.
2. est.ebitdaAvg and est.ebitAvg carry the fixed-ratio fabrication signature and are internally absurd — REJECTED. ebitdaAvg is exactly 23.75% of revenueAvg and ebitAvg exactly 23.31% in every forward year FY2026–FY2030. The 44-basis-point gap between them implies annual depreciation and amortisation of roughly $110 million against a reported $376.3 million in FY2025 — a 71% understatement. All forward valuation uses epsAvg.
3. The 8-K carrying second-quarter results contains no financial data. The 2026-07-30 8-K states only that a press release was issued; the exhibit is not in the extracted text. So NO management guidance of any kind is available — no revenue, EPS or margin guide — and every forward figure in this dive is consensus, labelled as such. All operating figures come from the 10-Q filed the same day, which is complete and carries preserved [TABLE] data.
4. seg_prod changed basis in 2020 and the series is not continuous. FY2019 and earlier report "Climate" and "Industrial" segments (the pre-spin structure); FY2021 onward report "Product" and "Service"; FY2020 is absent entirely. The Product/Service series from FY2021 is internally consistent and sums exactly to reported revenue in every year, and is used throughout; the pre-2020 rows are not comparable and are not used.
Where vendor and filing AGREED — recorded, and TT passes an unusual number of checks:

Non-equity tripwire — checked and passed. TT is ordinary shares of an Irish public limited company, NYSE-listed, per the Form 4 filings. Price of $472.24 is not par-like; beta is 1.195; the dividend is a variable declared amount at 0.84%; volume was 1.12M shares (~$529M of turnover); the 52-week band of $376.43 to $503.46 is a 34% range. This is common equity.
Technicals
- Price $472.24. −6.2% from the 52-week high of $503.46; +25.5% above the low of $376.43. Position within the annual range: 75th percentile.
- Barely above the short average and modestly above the long. +0.4% above a 50-day of $470.20; +7.3% above a 200-day of $440.28. RSI 46.1; MACD NEGATIVE at −3.85.
- Relative performance is the weakest twelve-month record in this batch relative to fundamentals. 3-month −2.9% against SPY +7.6%; 6-month +11.1% against SPY +11.1% — exactly level; 12-month +7.5% against SPY +24.3% and QQQ +30.8%. A 17-point twelve-month deficit at a company that grew revenue above 10% is the market pricing the margin, and it has been doing so for a while.

The reading, and there is one genuine item.
On 2026-03-05, director John A. Hayes bought 400 ordinary shares at $430.44 through a trust — an open-market P-Purchase. It is small, approximately $172,000, and it is the ONLY open-market purchase by any insider at any company in this entire batch. We record it as a mild positive and size it honestly: 400 shares is not a signal about a $104 billion company, but a director paying cash for stock is a different act from receiving it.
Everything else is board and executive compensation mechanics — three identical 438-share director awards on the same date, two identical 112-share tax withholdings at the same price, and the new Chief Operating Officer's on-appointment grant of 826 shares and 3,085 options struck at $484.58, which is 2.6% above today's price and is the only forward-looking price reference in the file.
Two management changes, from the 8-Ks, recorded and not weighted. Donald E. Simmons, age 55, previously Group President Americas, was appointed Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer effective 2026-07-01 at a base salary of $950,000. And Mingxiao (Gary) Guo, Senior Vice President and Chief Global Integrated Supply Chain Officer, departs effective 2026-08-01 under a separation agreement in which "the Company is foregoing the clawback of certain sign-on bonus payments made to Mr. Guo in connection with commencement of his employment", with the filing stating the departure "is not the result of any disagreement with the Company on any matter relating to the Company's operations, policies or practices, including its controls or financial related matters." A supply-chain chief departing in the same quarter that gross margin fell 200 basis points on 'inflation' is a coincidence we note and decline to interpret.
8. Verdict, kill-criteria and flip conditions
Hold.
What is genuinely excellent. Organic revenue growth of 9.0% in the quarter and Americas organic growth of 10.8%. Service revenue at 34.4% of the total, up 280 basis points in three years — an installed-base annuity that an independent outside analysis calls 'still early innings.' Return on equity of 34.5%, return on invested capital of 19.9%, net debt of 0.78 turns, interest coverage of 18.1x, free cash flow of $2,811.5 million on capital expenditure that is only 44% of depreciation. And the best-sourced knowledge-base lane in this batch: six claims, all bullish, and one of them confirmed by the filings.
Why it is a Hold, stated as three specific reservations.
First, the profit is not following the revenue. Revenue +10.6%, Total Segment Adjusted EBITDA +6.5%, gross margin −200 basis points to 35.6%, and every one of three segments losing margin — with positive price realisation and overhead down 100 basis points as a share of revenue. That combination narrows the problem to cost of goods and it is explained in this archive by four words: 'inflation and investments.'
Second, the consensus requires an acceleration the quarter argues against. First-half adjusted EPS grew 10.5%; the FY2026 consensus of $15.144 requires the second half to grow 21.7%; the Q3 consensus requires 20.6%. And the June beat of 0.9% was smaller than the revenue beat of 2.5% — the first time in five quarters that the earnings beat undershot the revenue beat.
Third, the base case is 2.7% and the payoff ratio is at parity. Our $485 is 11.3% below the street's target, and the street itself rates the stock Hold.
Pre-registered UPGRADE conditions — what would take this to Buy — Tactical:
- One quarter of POSITIVE operating leverage — Total Segment Adjusted EBITDA growing faster than revenue — with gross margin at or above 36.5%. This is the whole question and a single print settles it.
- A price near $400, which is 23.0x the FY2027 consensus of $17.384 and 9.2% below the 200-day average. At that level the base case is +21%, the asymmetry exceeds 2:1, and nothing has to change at the company.
- EMEA returning to organic growth from −3.7%, with segment margin above 16%.
- A separately disclosed service margin. 34.4% of revenue with unknown economics is the largest analytical gap in this file, and a number would likely support a higher multiple than the blend does.
- A Q3 print at or above $4.68 with margin expanding rather than contracting.
Pre-registered KILL criteria — what would take this to Avoid:
- A second consecutive quarter of negative operating leverage, confirming the compression is structural.
- Gross profit margin below 35.0%, from 35.6%.
- EMEA organic revenue down more than 5% with segment margin below 13%.
- A FY2026 consensus revision below $14.50, which would put the stock at 32.6x a falling number.
- Organic revenue growth below 6%, which would remove the one thing currently working.
Where TT fits in the Synthos Framework Portfolio. No position today. It goes on the watch list at $400 (23.0x FY2027 consensus) for a 2% initial sleeve in the quality-industrial bucket, with an alternative trigger of one clean quarter of positive operating leverage at any price below $520. Sizing note: this is a name where the business is not in doubt and the earnings estimate is. The mistake would be paying 31x a number that requires a 22% second-half acceleration, and then being unable to add when the estimate comes down and the price with it. Logged as a tracked Synthos call (Hold) as of 2026-08-04 at $472.24, with the fair-value anchors, the kill criteria and both upgrade triggers gradeable.
Single biggest risk: that the margin compression is not transitory. At 27.2 times FY2027 consensus, the price requires margin to recover — consensus has revenue growth decelerating from 10.8% to 8.9% while EPS growth accelerates to 15.8%, and the only way to reconcile those is expanding margin. The most recent quarter delivered the opposite in every segment, with positive pricing and falling overhead, which locates the problem in cost of goods and leaves 'inflation and investments' as the entire published explanation. If incremental margins stay negative, a 27x multiple on a business growing revenue 9% has nothing holding it up, and the twelve-month record — +7.5% against a market up 24.3% — suggests the de-rating has already begun.

- Traceability: 6 name-level knowledge-base claims name Trane Technologies out of 51,928 distilled claims, and ALL SIX ARE BULLISH (raw hits 6, case-sensitive entity hits 6, name-level 6, independent sources 2, discarded 0; breadth 2, claim count 6, net conviction positive-low). Every case-sensitive hit genuinely names Trane — a clean sweep, worth recording after the Quanta Computer homograph found on PWR in this same batch. FOUR come from a single
business_breakdownsepisode dated 2024-02-25, speaker Brett Larsson,speaker_role: independent, entity TT — on the direct sales force and 'Toyota-style operating system' driving '~2-3x peer growth' (68); on aftermarket/service at '~32% of mix in 2022... still early innings' (65); on chiller replacement economics of '3-5 year payback (25-50% IRR) over a 25-year life' (62); and on decarbonisation, digital services and indoor air quality with 'Trane compounding ~6% over the past decade as a share gainer' (60). TWO come fromcompound_and_friendsdated 2026-02-27, both conviction 70, both naming Carrier, Trane, Quanta Services and Parker Hannifin as AI-derivative picks-and-shovels — same-day near-duplicates counted as ONE observation, and the identical claim that appears in the Quanta Services dive in this batch, recorded so it is not double-counted at portfolio level. GRADING: the service-mix claim is CONFIRMED — service was 31.6% of FY2022 revenue and is 34.4% of FY2025, up 280 basis points; the '~6% compounding' figure has been BEATEN — FY2021 to FY2025 revenue compounded at 10.8%; the '2-3x peer growth' element is UNGRADED because the payload supplies no peer growth rates. All carry preserved
[TABLE]statement data. A GAP is recorded: because the earnings-release exhibit is absent, NO management guidance of any kind is available for FY2026 and every forward figure here is consensus. The 8-K corporate-action scan was run: despite the brief's flag that TT is M&A-active, NO acquisition, divestiture or merger appears anywhere in the archive — the only corporate events are two management changes. The 10-Q does reference acquisitions completed in the first quarter of 2026, which contributed 1.2 points of second-quarter revenue growth and produce $14.7 million of quarterly acquired-backlog amortisation, but they are not named or sized in the extracted text. - Where the filings contradicted or corrected the vendor (detailed in Section 7):
totalDebtchanges definition mid-series — FY2024's $5,385.0M includes $614.7M ofcapitalLeaseObligationswhile FY2025's $4,615.1M includes none (FY2023 also zero), so the apparent $769.9M debt reduction during 2025 is mostly definitional and the like-for-like reduction was $155.2M;est.ebitdaAvg/ebitAvg, rejected for a fixed-ratio signature (exactly 23.75% and 23.31% of revenue in every forward year FY2026–FY2030) and for an implied 44-basis-point D&A gap equating to roughly $110M a year against a reported $376.3M, a 71% understatement;seg_prod, which changes basis between the pre-2020 "Climate/Industrial" structure and the current "Product/Service" split with FY2020 missing entirely, so the series is not continuous before FY2021; and the missing earnings-release exhibit, which removes all company guidance from the archive. Where vendor and filing AGREED — recorded, and TT passes more checks than most:inc_qQ2 2026 revenue of $6,353.5M matches the 10-Q exactly, as does Q2 2025's $5,746.4M;seg_prodsums EXACTLY to reported revenue in every year from FY2021;seg_geosums EXACTLY to reported revenue, includes the home region at 80.5%, and contains NO duplicate subtotal — unlike BNY, GD and VRT in this same batch;effectiveTaxRateTTMof 18.99% matches the 10-Q's disclosed 18.8%; the enterprise-value rebuild leaves a residual of $446.7M, 0.4%; andtech.max_dd_from_peakof −6.20%, which carries the ADP-class signature of equallingpct_from_hi, was CHECKED against the three return windows and found CONSISTENT with a recent peak and an earlier trough. (quote.yearLowof $348.06 sits 7.5% fromtech.lo52of $376.43 — the largest such discrepancy in this batch;techis used throughout for internal consistency.) - Basis note: analyst estimates are on adjusted EPS. No GAAP-to-adjusted reconciliation is available because the earnings-release exhibit is not in the archive; the gap can be bounded from the payload — June-quarter
inc_qEPS of $4.15 against anearn_caladjusted actual of $4.31 is a 3.9% adjustment, and FY2025'sinc_aEPS of $13.09 against a consensus adjusted $13.018 is within 0.6%. Trane's adjustments are therefore small and no conclusion here turns on them. Trailing adjusted EPS of $13.68 is the sum of the four quarterlyearn_calactuals ($3.88 + $2.86 + $2.63 + $4.31). FY2025 first-quarter adjusted EPS of $2.40, used in Section 3, is DERIVED as the FY2025 consensus of $13.018 less the three reported quarters, becauseearn_caldoes not extend back to that report; it is labelled as derived at every use. - Estimate coverage: 11 analysts on FY2026 EPS, 14 on FY2027 — the anchor for all three fair values — with an FY2027 range of $16.938 to $17.912, a 5.6% spread; 8 on FY2028; 6 each on FY2029 and FY2030, which are excluded from every conclusion. Revenue coverage: 12, 17, 13, 12 and 6 analysts respectively.
- Peer note: the vendor peer set — ADP, CARR, EMR, GD, JCI, LMT, MMM, NOC, PH and WM — contains two genuine HVAC comparables (Carrier, Johnson Controls) among ten, alongside a payroll processor, three defence primes, a waste company and three diversified industrials. The payload supplies only market capitalisations and no multiples, so no peer-multiple comparison is drawn. ADP and GD are separately covered in this batch, and Carrier appears in the knowledge-base claim quoted in Section 4.
- Fair-value caveat: the $370 / $485 / $585 anchors are multiples of the FY2027 consensus adjusted EPS distribution — 21.8x the low of $16.938, 27.9x the mean of $17.384, and 32.7x the high of $17.912 — each cross-checked against FY2028E (18.4x, 24.1x, 29.1x). Stated arithmetic, not a discounted cash flow. The base is sensitivity-disclosed: 25x gives $435 and 31x gives $539. The base case assumes forward-multiple COMPRESSION from 31.2x toward roughly 27.5x, because we do not believe the FY2026 consensus of $15.144 — it requires second-half adjusted EPS of $8.20 against $6.74, a 21.7% acceleration on a first half that grew 10.5%. Our base of $485 sits 11.3% BELOW the street consensus of $546.88, and that negative divergence is stated as an explicit variant perception; note however that the street itself rates the stock HOLD by 14 to 11 with one sell, so the 15.8% target gap reads as target staleness rather than conviction.
- Half-weight management framing: the attribution of margin compression to "inflation and investments, partially offset by productivity and price realization", the characterisation of Americas demand as "strong", and the statement that the supply-chain officer's departure "is not the result of any disagreement" are all company statements and are half-weighted under house rules. The revenue decomposition (volume/pricing/organic/acquisitions/currency), the segment revenue and Segment Adjusted EBITDA figures, the gross-margin percentages and the tax rates are quantified filing disclosures and are treated as facts.
- Timing: second-quarter 2026 results were released 2026-07-30, five days before this dive, and beat consensus adjusted EPS by 0.9% ($4.31 against $4.27) on revenue 2.5% above expectations — the first quarter in the five-quarter record in which the earnings beat was SMALLER than the revenue beat. The next print is 2026-10-29, 86 days away (consensus adjusted EPS $4.68, requiring 20.6% growth, and revenue $6,461M). The most recent insider filings are dated 2026-06-09 and 2026-07-02. 2026-08-04 carried no company-specific filing.
