PACCAR PCAR

The Overview
PACCAR builds heavy trucks — Kenworth and Peterbilt in North America, DAF in Europe. It also sells the spare parts for them, which is the more profitable half, and it lends truck buyers the money to buy them through its own finance arm.
Truck manufacturing is one of the most cyclical businesses there is, and PACCAR has just been through the down leg. Revenue fell 15.5% last year and profit fell 42.9%. Quarterly earnings per share went from $2.13 in mid-2024 to $0.96 in early 2025 — a 55% fall in three quarters.
It has now turned. Revenue bottomed at $6.23 billion in the first quarter of this year and jumped 21% to $7.55 billion in the second. Profit per share is back to $1.43. Encouragingly, the truck-and-parts side made 16.2% more pre-tax profit in the first half than a year earlier even though revenue was lower — which means margins are improving, not just volumes.
So why not buy it?
Because the share price has already risen 40.9% over the past year and now sits 1.6% below its highest point ever. At $135.96 you are paying about 19 times what analysts expect the company to earn in 2027. And here is the telling part: that is more than the analysts themselves think it is worth. Their average price target is $132.40 — below today's price. The median is $131. And 28 of the 45 analysts covering the stock rate it "hold", the most of any company in this batch.
There is one more number worth sitting with. Even in 2028 — three years out — analysts expect PACCAR to earn $7.83 a share. It earned $8.76 in 2023. So on consensus, this company will not get back to its previous peak earnings within the forecast horizon, and you are being asked to pay 19 times for the journey.
What is genuinely good: the balance sheet. PACCAR holds $9.5 billion of cash and securities, and — unusually — carries no goodwill and no intangible assets at all. Its book value is real machinery, inventory and loans, not the residue of acquisitions. It pays about 2% in dividends and has a long history of large one-off year-end payments on top.
Our estimate of fair value is $128, about 6% below today's price.
We considered calling this Avoid. We did not, because nothing about the business is going wrong — the cycle is turning up, margins are improving, and the balance sheet is excellent. The problem is entirely the price, and prices change.
- Downside Risk 6/10. The best balance sheet here — attached to one of the most cyclical revenue lines here.
- Growth Quality 5/10. A real recovery off a real trough, extrapolated aggressively.
- Exponential Potential 3/10. Trucks. The AI-power link in our knowledge base is not PACCAR's business.
Putting a number on it: our fair-value estimate is $128 against a current price of $125.34 — real upside if our numbers are right.
Our summary metrics
"Rated 6 — the strongest industrial balance sheet in this batch attached to one of the most cyclical revenue lines. The supports: $6,307.9 million of cash plus $3,207.7 million of marketable securities at 2025-12-31, against $15,636.3 million of total debt that principally funds the PACCAR Financial Services loan and lease book rather than the manufacturing business; ZERO goodwill and ZERO intangible assets on the balance sheet, which is almost unique in this batch and means book value is real assets; total stockholders' equity of $19,264.0 million against $44,336.2 million of total assets; a beta of 0.976; and a 2.02% dividend from a company with a long record of paying large year-end specials. Against that: heavy-truck manufacturing is among the most cyclical industrial end markets there is, and the file contains the evidence — fiscal 2025 revenue fell 15.5% and diluted earnings fell 42.9%, with quarterly earnings per share falling from $2.13 in June 2024 to $0.96 in March 2025, a 55% peak-to-trough decline inside three quarters. The recovery is one quarter old. The captive finance arm introduces credit exposure to the same trucking customers who buy the trucks, so the two halves of the business correlate rather than diversify. And the entry is at RSI 71.0, 1.6% below the fifty-two-week high, after a 40.9% twelve-month move."
"Rated 5 — a cyclical recovering from a sharp downturn, with consensus extrapolating the recovery aggressively. The revenue record: $23,522M (FY2021), $28,820M (FY2022), $35,127M (FY2023), $33,664M (FY2024, MINUS 4.2%), $28,445M (FY2025, MINUS 15.5%). Diluted earnings per share: $3.57, $5.75, $8.76, $7.90, $4.51 — a 48.5% decline from the 2023 peak. The quarterly sequence shows the trough precisely: revenue of $8,772M in June 2024 falling to $6,234M in March 2026, then rebounding 21.1% sequentially to $7,546.7M in June 2026; earnings per share from $2.13 to $0.96 and back to $1.43. Filing-verified from the 10-Q, Truck, Parts and Other income before income taxes was $771.4 million in the June quarter against $724.8 million, and $1,351.8 million for the half against $1,163.0 million — up 16.2%. Financial Services revenues were $549.7 million in the quarter against $547.7 million, essentially flat. Consensus wants revenue of $28,733M in FY2026 (+1.0%), $31,383M in FY2027 (+9.2%) and $32,967M in FY2028 (+5.0%), with diluted EPS of $5.870, $7.088 and $7.826 — growth of 30.2%, 20.8% and 10.4%. What holds this at 5: FY2028's $7.826 is still 10.7% below the $8.76 PACCAR earned in 2023, so five years of the cycle produce no growth in peak earnings; and the recovery being extrapolated is one quarter old."
"Rated 3 — a superbly run manufacturer of a product that has existed for a century, with one indirect claim on a growth theme it does not actually serve. PACCAR builds Kenworth, Peterbilt and DAF trucks, sells parts through a global dealer network, and finances the trucks through PACCAR Financial Services. The parts business is the quality asset — higher margin, less cyclical, and it is why Truck, Parts and Other pre-tax income rose 16.2% in the first half while consolidated revenue fell — but the payload's segment block does not separate Parts from Trucks, so its contribution cannot be sized from this archive. Research and development spending of $445.5 million in FY2025 is 1.6% of revenue, directed at engines, emissions compliance and increasingly at electric and hydrogen powertrains, none of which is disclosed separately. The knowledge base's single claim places PACCAR third in a list of artificial-intelligence power-build-out beneficiaries behind Caterpillar and Cummins, prefaced by 'eventually' — and the mechanism it names, 'transformers, switchgear, power distribution', is not a product PACCAR makes. Whatever benefit exists would arrive indirectly, through freight demand created by construction activity. A 3: an excellent, disciplined, capital-returning cyclical with no compounding mechanism and no credible claim on a secular growth curve."
What does “fair value” mean?
Fair value is Synthos’s estimate of what one share is worth today, based on our model of the company’s future cash generation and the risks to it. It is not a price target or a prediction of where the stock trades next quarter — it’s the price where we think risk and reward are balanced. Above it, you’re paying for outcomes better than our base case; below it, the market is offering a margin of safety.
The model’s inputs and weightings are proprietary — they’re the product. What we publish is the output, plus an independent, public-math cross-check further down the page (“Check our number”) so you can judge it for yourself.

- "The stock is 1.6% below its 52-week high of $138.21, up 40.9% in twelve months and 18.9% in three, with RSI at 71.0 — overbought — and the price 11.4% above the 50-DMA. The street's consensus target of $132.40 sits 2.6% BELOW the market and 28 of 45 analysts rate it Hold."
- What we’re watching
- "The 2026-10-27 print against consensus EPS $1.56. Within it: whether revenue holds the June quarter's $7,546.7M after a 21.1% sequential rebound; Truck, Parts and Other pre-tax income against $771.4M; and whether Financial Services revenue moves off its flat $549.7M."

- "Consensus wants EPS of $5.870 in FY2026 and $7.088 in FY2027 — growth of 30.2% and 20.8% off a trough. That is a normal cyclical recovery path and it is credible. It is also fully in a 19.2x forward multiple, and FY2028's $7.826 still sits 10.7% below the $8.76 earned in 2023."
- What we’re watching
- "Whether Class 8 order and build rates support the consensus revenue recovery to $31.4bn in FY2027. Whether Truck, Parts and Other margin keeps expanding — pre-tax income rose 16.2% in H1 on falling revenue. Whether Financial Services credit losses rise as the freight cycle turns."

| Net income | $1,123M | $972M | $872M | $505M | $724M | $590M | $557M | $605M | $752M |
Read the two tables together. Revenue peaked at $8,772 million in the June 2024 quarter and bottomed at $6,234 million in March 2026 — a 28.9% decline over seven quarters — before rebounding 21.1% sequentially in June. Earnings per share fell 55% from $2.13 to $0.96 in three quarters and have recovered to $1.43.
The margin story is better than the revenue story and it is the reason the score is 5 rather than 4. From the 10-Q filed 2026-07-29, filing-verified: Truck, Parts and Other income before income taxes was $771.4 million in the June quarter against $724.8 million a year earlier, and $1,351.8 million for the six months against $1,163.0 million — up 16.2% — on lower revenue. A manufacturer growing pre-tax income 16.2% while revenue falls is holding price and taking cost out, and in a cyclical that is the highest-quality thing management can do in a downturn.
Financial Services is stable and small. Revenues of $549.7 million in the June quarter against $547.7 million, and $1,091.9 million for the half against $1,075.7 million — essentially flat, and 7.8% of consolidated revenue. It is not the earnings driver, and its stability through the downturn is a mild positive.
One structural note the payload does not make. PACCAR consolidates a manufacturer and a captive lender in one income statement, which is why interestExpense in the payload swings from $346.5 million in FY2025 to $31.1 million in FY2024 to zero in FY2022 and FY2020 — the field is not capturing a consistent concept. All interest and financing figures in this dive come from the filings, and the consolidated debt of $15,636.3 million should not be read as manufacturing leverage: most of it funds the finance receivables and lease portfolio.
2. Balance sheet — the best in this batch
| (payload, 2025-12-31) | FY2025 | FY2024 | FY2023 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cash and cash equivalents | $6,307.9M | $7,060.8M | $7,181.7M |
| Marketable securities | $3,207.7M | $2,778.8M | $1,822.6M |
| Cash + securities | $9,515.6M | $9,839.6M | $9,004.3M |
| Total debt | $15,636.3M | $15,895.0M | $14,377.1M |
| Goodwill | $0 | $0 | $0 |
| Intangible assets | $0 | $0 | $0 |
| Total stockholders' equity | $19,264.0M | $17,506.9M | $15,878.8M |
| Total assets | $44,336.2M | $43,418.9M | $40,823.4M |
Two things stand out and both are unusual in this programme.
PACCAR carries no goodwill and no intangible assets at all. In a batch where Boston Scientific's intangibles are 56.5% of assets, Cigna's exceed its entire equity, and Colgate's treasury stock exceeds its book value by $28 billion, PACCAR's $19,264 million of equity is backed entirely by tangible assets — plant, inventory, receivables and securities. Price-to-book of 3.53x therefore means something here, unlike on most of the names in this batch.
And the cash position is real. $9,515.6 million of cash and marketable securities, of which the vendor's netDebt calculation of $9,328.4 million captures only the cash — it omits the entire $3,207.7 million of marketable securities, which is the documented short-term-investments omission and is corrected in Section 5.
Cash flow:
| FY2025 | FY2024 | FY2023 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operating cash flow | $4,415.8M | $4,640.9M | $4,190.0M |
| Capital expenditure | ($1,386.6M) | ($1,745.6M) | ($1,262.5M) |
| Free cash flow | $3,029.2M | $2,895.3M | $2,927.5M |
| FCF yield at $71.56B | 4.23% | — | — |
| Dividends paid | ($2,267.1M) | ($2,288.5M) | ($1,518.6M) |
| Share repurchases | ($36.1M) | ($4.5M) | ($3.5M) |
Free cash flow was $3,029.2 million in the trough year — an extraordinarily stable series across a period when earnings fell 48.5% from the peak. capexToDepreciationTTM of 1.459 is plausible: the 10-Q shows two distinct investing lines — "Payments for property, plant and equipment" of $292.6 million and "Acquisitions of equipment for operating leases" of $417.1 million in the first half of 2026 — and the vendor's single capitalExpenditure figure aggregates them, which is defensible but conflates factory investment with lease-fleet purchases.
Capital return is dividend-led and enormous relative to buyback. $2,267.1 million of dividends in FY2025 — 3.2% of market capitalisation and 74.8% of free cash flow — against $36.1 million of repurchases. dividendPerShareTTM of $2.74 is a 2.02% yield, and PACCAR's practice of paying a large year-end special dividend means the trailing figure understates the through-cycle payout. Total shareholder yield is approximately 2.1%; this is not a buyback story.
3. Valuation — priced in or room?
At $135.96 (market cap $71.56B, 526.4M shares implied):
| Trailing | FY2026E | FY2027E | FY2028E | FY2029E | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Diluted EPS | $4.76 (TTM) | $5.870 (9) | $7.088 (11) | $7.826 (8) | $7.680 (6) |
| EPS growth | — | +30.2% | +20.8% | +10.4% | MINUS 1.9% |
| P/E | 28.6x | 23.2x | 19.2x | 17.4x | 17.7x |
| Consensus revenue | $27.37bn (TTM) | $28.73bn | $31.38bn | $32.97bn | $33.48bn |
| Revenue growth | — | +1.0% | +9.2% | +5.0% | +1.6% |
| For reference: FY2023 peak EPS | — | — | — | $8.76 | — |
Estimate coverage is thin for a $72 billion company — 9 analysts on FY2026 EPS and 11 on FY2027, the anchor, with an FY2027 range of $6.357 to $7.755, a 22.0% spread. 8 on FY2028 and 6 on FY2029.
Two things in this table decide the verdict.
First, consensus does not get back to the peak. FY2028's $7.826 is 10.7% below the $8.76 PACCAR earned in FY2023, and FY2029's $7.680 is lower still. So the sell side's own model says this cycle's next peak is below the last one, and the stock is 1.6% from its all-time high.
Second, the multiple is at the wrong end of the cycle. 19.2x FY2027 is being paid on recovering, not depressed, earnings. The classic cyclical discipline is to pay a high multiple on trough earnings and a low one on peak earnings; at $135.96 the market is paying 28.6x trailing and 19.2x a recovering forward number, which is neither.
est.ebitdaAvg and est.ebitAvg are fabricated and rejected — the twelfth consecutive file. In every one of the eight years present, ebitdaAvg is exactly 16.5928% of revenueAvg and ebitAvg exactly 13.5670% — with the sole exception of the FY2022 row, where ebitAvg breaks to 9.638%, which is itself evidence the series is generated. All forward valuation uses epsAvg, which verifies imperfectly: the FY2025 epsAvg of $5.032 overshot the actual $4.51 by 11.6%, so this consensus has recently been too optimistic on this name by a material margin.
Enterprise value — rebuilt, and the defect is the documented short-term-investments omission. enterpriseValueTTM of $80,686.3M less market capitalisation is $9,121.7M, close to the payload's own netDebt of $9,328.4M, which is total debt of $15,636.3M less cash of $6,307.9M — omitting the entire $3,207.7 million of marketable securities. Rebuilt on cash plus securities, net debt is $6,120.7 million and enterprise value is approximately $77,685 million — 3.7% below the vendor's figure. minorityInterest is 0, so no NCI adjustment applies. And the deeper point: for a company whose debt principally funds a captive finance book, a consolidated enterprise value is only loosely meaningful, and evToEBITDATTM of 22.7x and netDebtToEBITDATTM of 2.56x should be treated as approximate rather than diagnostic.
3a. What today's price assumes (the inversion)
At $135.96 — 23.2x FY2026 consensus and 19.2x FY2027 — the price embeds:
- Diluted EPS of $5.870 in FY2026, up 30.2%. (Consensus, 9 analysts.) The first half delivered $2.58 ($1.15 plus $1.43), leaving $3.29 for the second half — a 27.5% sequential-half increase. The September consensus of $1.56 implies a December quarter of $1.73, which would be the best quarter since June 2024. That is a demanding second half.
- Diluted EPS of $7.088 in FY2027, up a further 20.8%, on revenue growth of 9.2%. (Consensus, 11 analysts.)
- A Class 8 truck cycle that recovers on schedule. (Our derivation; the filings supply the trough.) This is the most fragile assumption in the price. PACCAR does not disclose order books or build rates in the extracted filings, so the only evidence for the recovery in this archive is one quarter of sequential revenue growth.
- The market keeps paying 19-23x forward earnings for a heavy-truck manufacturer. (Our number.) At 15x FY2027E the stock is $106; at 22x it is $156.
- That consensus is not too optimistic again. (Our derivation.) The FY2025 consensus overshot the actual by 11.6%. A repeat of that error on FY2027 would put the number at $6.27 and the stock at $120 on an unchanged multiple.
3b. The return bridge (why the multiple moves)
Expected return over the next twelve months decomposes as: EPS growth (+20.8%, from FY2026E $5.870 to FY2027E $7.088) + multiple drift (COMPRESSION, from 19.2x toward roughly 18.1x) + shareholder yield (+2.1%, dividend-led).
Our base assumes modest multiple compression and the reason is cyclical discipline rather than any deterioration. A cyclical whose earnings are recovering should see its multiple fall as the E rises — that is how the cycle works — and 19.2x on FY2027 is already above where this business has typically been valued on recovering earnings. The street agrees more strongly than we do: its consensus target implies 18.7x FY2027E and sits below the market.
If the multiple simply holds at 19.2x and consensus is met, the stock is $136 in a year plus a 2.1% dividend. The earnings growth is real and it is already in the price.
3c. Variant perception (where we differ, what would surprise)
- We are 3.3% below the street and, unusually, the street is already below the market. Consensus $132.40 is 2.6% below spot and the median $131 is 3.6% below. 28 of 45 analysts rate this Hold and the vendor's consensus label is Hold — one of only two in this batch. When our number, the sell side's number and the sell side's rating all point the same way, the honest conclusion is that there is no edge here and the price is simply full.
- We think the peak-earnings comparison is the discipline the market is skipping. PACCAR earned $8.76 in FY2023. Consensus has $7.826 in FY2028 and $7.680 in FY2029. Paying 1.6% below an all-time high for a cyclical whose next forecast peak is 10.7% below its last one is the specific error this house exists to name.
- We think the parts business is the under-disclosed asset and nobody can size it from this archive. Truck, Parts and Other pre-tax income rose 16.2% in the first half on falling revenue, which is almost certainly parts mix — and neither the payload's
seg_prodblock nor the extracted filings separate Parts from Trucks. Watchable event: any disclosure that separates the parts business, which would justify a structurally higher multiple. - Positive surprise that would force a re-rate: a December quarter above $1.73; or FY2027 consensus revised above $7.50; or separate disclosure of parts revenue and margin; or Financial Services revenue growth resuming from its flat $549.7 million.
- Negative surprise that would break the thesis: a September quarter below $1.40, which would say the June rebound was a restocking quarter rather than a cycle turn; or FY2027 consensus cut below $6.50; or rising credit losses at PACCAR Financial Services as freight rates weaken; or a repeat of the FY2025 pattern in which consensus overshot the actual by 11.6%.
Synthos fair values
All three anchors are multiples of the FY2027 consensus diluted EPS distribution (mean $7.088, low $6.357, high $7.755, 11 analysts), cross-checked against the FY2023 peak of $8.76.
- Bear ~$95 — 14.9x the FY2027 consensus LOW of $6.357, and 10.8x the FY2023 peak EPS of $8.76. Cross-checks: 16.2x FY2026E; 2.2% above the 52-week low of $93.00; 20.2% below the street's low target of $119. The scenario: the June quarter proves to be restocking rather than a cycle turn, Class 8 build rates stall, consensus overshoots again as it did on FY2025, and a cyclical at 19x reverts to a trough multiple on trough earnings. MINUS 30.1%.
- Base ~$128 — 18.1x the FY2027 consensus MEAN of $7.088, and 14.6x the FY2023 peak of $8.76. Cross-checks: 21.8x FY2026E; 16.4x FY2028E; a 2.14% dividend yield; a rebuilt enterprise value of $73.5bn. Sensitivity, stated openly: 15x gives $106 and 22x gives $156. The estimate has a 22.0% spread and the multiple assumption a 47% one, so the multiple carries the risk. The scenario: the recovery proceeds at the consensus pace, Truck, Parts and Other margin keeps improving, the multiple compresses modestly as earnings rise, and the dividend continues near $2.7 with periodic specials. MINUS 5.9%.
- Bull ~$170 — 21.9x the FY2027 consensus HIGH of $7.755, and 19.4x the FY2023 peak. Cross-checks: 22.9% above the 52-week high of $138.21; 28.4% above the street's $132.40 and 14.9% above the street high of $148. The scenario: the freight cycle recovers faster than consensus, PACCAR's parts annuity is recognised and separately disclosed, Class 8 pricing holds through the recovery as it did through the downturn, and the market re-rates a debt-free manufacturer with $9.5 billion of cash and securities toward a quality-industrial multiple. +25.0%.
Base is 5.9% BELOW spot; asymmetry roughly 0.83:1 (30.1% down, 25.0% up), before a dividend of approximately 2.1%. A base below the price, a payoff ratio under one, a street target below the market, 28 hold ratings and an entry at RSI 71 one quarter after the cyclical trough is, on arithmetic, close to an Avoid. It is a Hold because the operating direction is unambiguously positive and the balance sheet is the strongest in this batch.
4. Knowledge base — one claim, high skill, indirect and hedged
Raw hits: 1. Case-sensitive entity matches: 1. Name-level claims on PACCAR: 1, and it names the company third in a list of three.
The sweep ran entity terms PCAR, PACCAR, Paccar, Kenworth, Peterbilt and DAF plus free text on paccar, kenworth, peterbilt, class 8, heavy truck and trucking freight across all 52,021 distilled claims.
The one claim, verbatim:
> 2025-09-14 · BULLISH · conviction 68 · horizon: thesis · SKILL 2.0 · role: independent · speaker: null · entities: CAT, CMI, PCAR · channel: jordi_visser · categories: datacenter power, AI infrastructure, electrical equipment
> "The AI power buildout is a macro theme spanning transformers, switchgear, power distribution — Caterpillar, Cummins, eventually Paccar and electrical-component names benefit as demand shows up in earnings."
Three observations, and they pull in opposite directions.
Against it: the mechanism named is not PACCAR's business. The claim identifies "transformers, switchgear, power distribution" as the theme. Caterpillar and Cummins both manufacture generator sets and engines sold directly into data-centre backup power. PACCAR manufactures Kenworth, Peterbilt and DAF trucks, sells their parts, and builds the PACCAR MX engine for those trucks. There is no product in PACCAR's line that goes into a data centre. Any benefit would arrive indirectly — through freight demand generated by construction and equipment movement — and the claim does not say so.
Also against it: the claim itself hedges the mention. PACCAR is named third, after the two direct beneficiaries, and prefaced by the word "eventually" — which is the author flagging distance from the theme, and which we read as the claim doing our work for us.
For it: the skill weight is 2.0, the highest attached to any claim in this batch, and the horizon is thesis rather than fact, so it does not decay quickly. A high-skill voice making a conditional, correctly-hedged inclusion is a better signal than a low-skill voice making an emphatic one.
Net: we grade this as weakly positive, indirect, and not load-bearing in either direction. It does not describe PACCAR's revenue and it is not used to support the verdict.
What is absent is more informative than what is present. There is no bearish claim on PACCAR, no sector lane on heavy trucks, Class 8 freight, trucking rates or transport equipment, and nothing anywhere in 52,021 claims about the truck cycle that determines this company's earnings — despite the store carrying a deep macro lane on consumer credit, an eleven-claim lane on oil services, and a two-claim lane on equipment rental in this same batch. Breadth 1, claim count 1, net conviction positive-indirect.
5. Data integrity — what we rejected and why
Six findings, and two of the cleanest segment blocks in this batch.
1. netDebt omits the entire $3,207.7 million of marketable securities — the documented short-term-investments defect, at its largest in this batch. The payload reports netDebt of $9,328.4 million, which is total debt of $15,636.3M less cash of $6,307.9M. It ignores shortTermInvestments of $3,207.7 million on the same balance sheet. On cash plus securities, net debt is $6,120.7 million — 34.4% lower. enterpriseValueTTM of $80,686.3M carries the same omission; rebuilt, it is approximately $77,685 million, 3.7% lower. Consequential: netDebtToEBITDATTM of 2.56x should be roughly 1.68x.
2. earn_cal.revenueActual reports Truck, Parts and Other revenue only and excludes Financial Services — and the gap reconciles to the dollar. The earnings calendar reports June-quarter revenue of $6,997.0 million; inc_q and the 10-Q report $7,546.7 million. The difference is $549.7 million, which is EXACTLY the Financial Services revenue for the quarter disclosed in the 10-Q. The same holds for the December 2025 quarter: earn_cal $6,252.1M against inc_q $6,820.8M, a $568.7 million gap. So two fields in the same payload report revenue on two different bases, and a screen comparing the earnings-calendar actual to the income-statement figure would read a 7.3% shortfall that does not exist.
3. inc_a.interestExpense and inc_q.interestExpense are not a consistent concept and are rejected. The annual series reads $346.5M (FY2025), $31.1M (FY2024), $5.1M (FY2023), $0 (FY2022), $4.1M (FY2021), $0 (FY2020) — a range of two orders of magnitude with a zero in it, for a company with $15.6 billion of debt. The quarterly series is worse: $0 in five of nine quarters, $331.3M in March 2025 and $21.3M in March 2026. A company running a captive finance arm has substantial and continuous interest expense; a field that reports zero for it is not measuring anything. All financing figures in this dive come from the filings, and interestCoverageRatioTTM is rejected.
4. inc_q carries zero depreciationAndAmortization in the June 2026 row. The vendor reports $0 against $200.1M, $209.2M, $205.8M, $207.3M and $205.1M in the five preceding quarters. Every other field in that row — revenue $7,546.7M, operating income $879.2M, net income $752.0M matching the 10-Q's $752.0M exactly, EPS $1.43 — is correct. The partial-row class.
5. est.ebitdaAvg and est.ebitAvg carry the fixed-ratio fabrication signature, with a revealing break. Exactly 16.5928% and 13.5670% of revenueAvg in seven of eight years — and in the FY2022 row ebitAvg breaks to 9.638%, which is itself evidence the series is generated rather than aggregated. All forward valuation uses epsAvg, with the caveat in finding 6.
6. The est.epsAvg series has recently been materially too optimistic on this name. The FY2025 epsAvg of $5.032 against a reported actual of $4.51 is an 11.6% overshoot — and the FY2024 estimate of $7.937 against an actual of $7.90 was accurate, so the error is specific to the downturn year. We use epsAvg because it is the only usable forward series, and we flag that on this company in this part of the cycle it has been wrong in the optimistic direction by a double-digit percentage.
VERIFIED CLEAN — recorded because a clean check is a finding.
seg_prod reconciles exactly. FY2025: Truck, Parts and Other $26,235.1M plus Financial Services $2,209.7M equals $28,444.8 million, which is total revenue to the dollar, and the identity holds for FY2024. The limitation is real but is not an error: the block does not separate Parts from Trucks, and Parts is the higher-margin, less cyclical half. The FY2023 and FY2022 rows show only the Truck, Parts and Other line with no Financial Services entry, so the block loses a field going backwards.
seg_geo reconciles exactly. FY2025: United States $15,429.9M plus Europe $6,945.9M plus Other Countries $6,069.0M equals $28,444.8 million, again to the dollar, with the same identity in FY2024. In a batch where seg_geo failed on five of twelve names, PACCAR's is among the cleanest and it is the only three-region breakdown here that reconciles.
capitalExpenditure is plausible and its composition is explained by the filings. The 10-Q discloses two investing lines — "Payments for property, plant and equipment" of $292.6 million and "Acquisitions of equipment for operating leases" of $417.1 million for the first half of 2026 — which the vendor aggregates into a single figure. capexToDepreciationTTM of 1.459 is consistent with a company that buys lease fleet as well as factory plant, and no corruption signature fires.
Goodwill and intangible assets are genuinely zero, not omitted — PACCAR has grown organically and its balance sheet reflects it.
Non-equity tripwire — checked and passed. PCAR is common stock, NASDAQ-listed. Price of $135.96 is not par-like; beta is 0.976; volume was 5.91M shares (~$803M of turnover); the 52-week band of $93.00 to $138.21 is a 49% range. This is common equity.
Vendor composite rating — noted, not used. B / 3 overall. Unobjectionable and adds nothing this dive has not derived.
6. Technicals and insiders
- Price $135.96. MINUS 1.6% from the 52-week high of $138.21 — the second-closest to its high in this batch after United Rentals; +46.2% above the low of $93.00. Position within the annual range: 95th percentile.
- Well above both moving averages: +11.4% above a 50-day average of $122.01; +16.9% above a 200-day average of $116.32.
- RSI 71.0 — overbought, the second-highest reading in this batch after Boston Scientific's 82.0. MACD +3.69.
- Current distance from the six-year peak: MINUS 1.6%, identical to the 252-day figure — the six-year peak is inside the last twelve months and the coincidence is correct.
- Relative performance: 3-month +18.9% against SPY +7.6%; 6-month +9.1% against SPY +11.1%; 12-month +40.9% against SPY +24.3% and QQQ +30.8%. The whole outperformance was earned in the last three months, on a business whose earnings troughed in the March quarter — so the market moved on the turn before the numbers confirmed it, and has now priced it.
- Sentiment: 1 strong buy, 13 buy, 28 hold and 3 sell across 45 analysts — 28 holds is the most in this batch and the vendor's consensus label is "Hold", one of only two here. Consensus target $132.40 — 2.6% BELOW spot; median $131 — 3.6% below; high $148 (+8.9%), low $119 (MINUS 12.5%). The entire published target range spans only $119 to $148, a 24% band around a price already at its top end.
Today's move. PACCAR closed up 2.95% at $135.96, having opened at $129.78 — also the day's low — and traded to $136.58 on 5.91 million shares. A 4.8% intraday range on nearly six million shares is a heavy session for a name with a 0.976 beta, and the close near the high extends an already extended technical position.
Insiders. The most recent transaction is a sale: on 2026-07-31, three days after the second-quarter release, Paulo Henrique Bolgar, Vice President, sold 2,897 shares at $133.90, retaining 3,831 — a 43.1% reduction of his disclosed holding, executed within 1.5% of today's price. The balance of the file consists of M-Exempt option conversions and related routine transactions. There is no open-market purchase, and no transaction by the chief executive or chief financial officer.
7. Verdict, kill-criteria and flip conditions
Hold — and this is the weakest Hold in this batch.
We considered Avoid and set out why we did not use it below.
The arithmetic. At $135.96 PACCAR trades at 23.2x the FY2026 consensus of $5.870 and 19.2x FY2027's $7.088. Our base fair value of $128 is 5.9% below spot with 0.83:1 asymmetry and a 2.1% dividend. The street's consensus target of $132.40 is itself 2.6% below the market and its median of $131 is 3.6% below; 28 of 45 analysts rate it Hold. And consensus does not reach the prior peak: FY2028's $7.826 is 10.7% below the $8.76 earned in FY2023, and FY2029's $7.680 is lower still.
What is genuinely good. The cycle has turned — revenue bottomed at $6,234.3M in March and rebounded 21.1% to $7,546.7M in June, with earnings per share back to $1.43 from a $0.96 trough. Truck, Parts and Other pre-tax income rose 16.2% in the first half on lower revenue, which is margin expansion in a downturn and the highest-quality thing a cyclical management can deliver. Free cash flow was $3,029.2 million in the trough year, barely below the $2,927.5M of the peak year. The balance sheet is the strongest in this batch: $9,515.6 million of cash and marketable securities, and zero goodwill and zero intangible assets — so book value is real. And the dividend is $2,267.1 million a year, 3.2% of market capitalisation, with a long record of year-end specials on top.
Why not Avoid. Because nothing is deteriorating. Revenue is rising sequentially, margins are expanding, free cash flow is stable through the cycle, the balance sheet is unlevered on a manufacturing basis, and the dividend is covered nearly one and a half times by free cash flow. Avoid is for businesses that are getting worse; PACCAR is getting better and is merely expensive. A base 5.9% below spot is a full price, not a broken one.
Why not Watch. Because there is no pending disclosure that resolves anything: the 2026-10-27 print is an ordinary quarter in a cycle that will take years to play out, and the condition we want is a lower price rather than new information.
Pre-registered UPGRADE conditions — what would take this to Buy — Tactical:
- A price below roughly $106, which is 15x FY2027E and restores a payoff ratio above 2:1 on the base of $128.
- A December 2026 quarter above $1.73, which is what the FY2026 consensus of $5.870 implicitly requires and would confirm the recovery is running ahead of expectation.
- FY2027 consensus revised above $7.50, from $7.088 — reversing the pattern in which FY2025 consensus overshot the actual by 11.6%.
- Separate disclosure of the Parts business, which is the quality asset and which no field in this archive can size.
- Financial Services revenue returning to growth from its flat $549.7 million a quarter.
- Insider buying — the most recent transaction is a vice-president selling 43% of his holding at $133.90.
Pre-registered KILL criteria — what would take this to Avoid:
- A September 2026 quarter below $1.40, which would say the June rebound was restocking rather than a cycle turn.
- FY2027 consensus cut below $6.50.
- Truck, Parts and Other pre-tax income falling year on year, reversing the 16.2% first-half improvement.
- Rising credit losses or provisions at PACCAR Financial Services, which would mean the manufacturing and lending halves are deteriorating together rather than offsetting.
- A dividend cut, which for a company that has paid through every recent cycle would be a genuine signal.
- A break below the 200-day moving average of $116.32 on company-specific news.
Where PCAR fits in the Synthos Framework Portfolio. The industrials sleeve, no position today, with a 1.5% starter contingent on a price below $106. Sizing note: this is a high-quality cyclical and the discipline for high-quality cyclicals is to buy them on trough earnings at a high multiple, not on recovering earnings at a high multiple — and at 19.2x forward, one quarter past the trough, 1.6% below the all-time high, the entry is on the wrong side of that rule. Logged as a tracked Synthos call (Hold) as of 2026-08-04 at $135.96, with the fair-value anchors, kill criteria and upgrade conditions all gradeable.
Single biggest risk: a cyclical recovery bought at 19.2x forward earnings one quarter after the trough. PACCAR's quarterly earnings per share fell 55% in three quarters, from $2.13 to $0.96, and have recovered to $1.43 across five. The market has responded by taking the shares up 40.9% in twelve months, 18.9% of it in the last three, to within 1.6% of the all-time high at RSI 71. Consensus now requires a 30.2% earnings increase this year and 20.8% next, and the same consensus overshot the FY2025 outcome by 11.6%. The offsetting consideration, and it is substantial: PACCAR generated $3.03 billion of free cash flow in the trough year, holds $9.5 billion of cash and securities, carries no goodwill, and expanded Truck, Parts and Other pre-tax income 16.2% while revenue fell — so the downside case here is a lower share price, not an impaired business. That is exactly why this is a Hold and not an Avoid: everything is right about the company and one thing is wrong about the price.

There is no adjusted-earnings series for this name, which is unusual in this batch and is a mild positive for comparability.est.ebitdaAvgandest.ebitAvgare rejected outright; all forward valuation usesepsAvg, with the 11.6% FY2025 overshoot disclosed. - Estimate coverage: 9 analysts on FY2026 EPS and 11 on FY2027 — the anchor for all three fair values, with an FY2027 range of $6.357 to $7.755, a 22.0% spread, the second-widest in this batch — and 8 on FY2028, 6 on FY2029. Coverage of 9 and 11 analysts on a $71.6 billion company is thin, and the FY2029 estimate of $7.680 falling below FY2028's $7.826 on higher revenue is noted and excluded from conclusions.
- Peer note: the vendor peer set — AMETEK, Carrier Global, Cummins, Canadian National Railway, Ferguson, W.W. Grainger, L3Harris, Roper Technologies, Symbotic, United Rentals — contains exactly one heavy-truck comparable (Cummins, and it is an engine maker rather than a truck manufacturer). Daimler Truck, Traton and Volvo Group — the three companies that with PACCAR constitute the global heavy-truck oligopoly — are all absent, as is Navistar. The set is assembled from diversified industrials with no shared end market. No peer-multiple comparison is drawn.
- Fair-value caveat: the $95 / $128 / $170 anchors are multiples of the FY2027 consensus diluted EPS distribution — 14.9x the low of $6.357, 18.1x the mean of $7.088, and 21.9x the high of $7.755 — each cross-checked against the FY2023 peak EPS of $8.76, at which the three anchors represent 10.8x, 14.6x and 19.4x. Stated arithmetic, not a discounted cash flow. The base is sensitivity-disclosed: 15x gives $106 and 22x gives $156. The base assumes modest multiple compression from 19.2x toward 18.1x, which is cyclical arithmetic rather than a judgement about deterioration — a cyclical's multiple should fall as its earnings recover — and the street's own consensus target implies 18.7x and sits 2.6% below the market.
- Cyclical-position note: the central discipline applied in this dive is that consensus does not reach the prior peak within the forecast horizon: PACCAR earned $8.76 in FY2023, and consensus has $7.826 in FY2028 and $7.680 in FY2029. Paying 1.6% below an all-time high, at 19.2x forward earnings, one quarter after the cyclical trough, for a business whose next forecast peak is 10.7% below its last one, is the specific configuration this verdict is set against.
